New Delhi. Railways has changed the rules of optional insurance on travel tickets. According to the new rules, now the child will not get the benefit of optional insurance if he buys a half ticket. According to IRCTC, now passengers will be able to get the benefit of insurance facility only after booking full ticket. At the same time, IRCTC has also increased the premium of alternative insurance. The premium per passenger has now been reduced to 45 paise. Earlier it was 35 paisa.

According to IRCTC, the benefit of the alternative insurance scheme will be available only to passengers who book e-tickets. Insurance scheme will not be applicable on tickets purchased from railway ticket counter. By purchasing online or e-ticket, this facility will be available on confirmed and RAC tickets of all classes of the train – First AC, Second AC, Third AC, Sleeper, Chaircar etc. Passengers with waiting tickets will not be eligible for this insurance scheme.

Actually, while booking tickets online, one has to choose whether they want to avail the insurance facility or not. If the passenger wants to avail the insurance facility then he has to click on that option. Then a message comes from the insurance company on the railway passenger's mobile and e-mail. Even if the route of the train is changed during the journey, the passenger will still get the benefit of this facility.

Let us tell you that under this insurance scheme, in case of death of a railway passenger, Rs 10 lakh, Rs 7.5 lakh in case of partial disability and Rs 2 lakh are given to the family for treatment in case of injury. Railway Passenger Optional Insurance Scheme was started by Indian Railways in September 2016. At that time, the insurance premium per passenger was 92 paise which was paid by the government itself. After this, it was increased to 42 paise in August and its burden was passed on to the passengers. Later it was reduced to 35 paise.
