Delhi hit a new records for power demand in May, recording a new peak of 7,572 MW mark on May 20, 2024 at 3:33 pm. The previous record was made in May 2023 at 7,438 MW. While the two discoms in elhi were able to meet the power demand comfortably, the national capital is reeling for a severe heat wave.

New Delhi: Delhi reported peak power demand of 7,572 MW, breaking the previous record of 7,438 MW in May, according to power distribution (discom) company officials. Moreover, peak power demand exceeded the 7,000 MW mark for the 3rd straight day, according to discom officials. The previous record this month was set on Saturday at 6,898 MW at 3:40 pm.

The minimum load on May 20 stood at 4,847 MW compared to 4,423 MW on Sunday. The maximum load on Sunday was recorded at 7,164 MW, according to data from the State Load Despatch Centre in Delhi. The peak power demand in May has consistently exceeded that in May 202 with peak power demand standing at 5,781 MW in the first 16 days of May 2023. In April 2024, power demand stood in the range of 3,809-5,447 MW, compared to 3,388-5,422 MW in April 2023.

What is the peak power demand pattern in Delhi?

In Delhi, peak power demand stood at 6,916 MW in 2023. The figure stood at 7,070 MW in 2022. However, the record for all-time high power demand was set on June 29, 2022 at 7,695 MW. Delhi’s 2 discoms, BSES Yamuna and BSES Rajdhani were able to comfortably meet the surge in demand for power in the national capital, the ANI reported, citing discom officials.

Delhi grapples heatwave

The national capital is grappling with a heatwave with temperatures expected to soar near the 45-degree Celsius mark. On Sunday, Delhi’s Najafgarh region recorded the highest temperature this season at 47.8-degree Celsius. A temperature of 47-degree Celsius was recorded in Pitampura, while 47.7 degrees was recorded in Mungeshpur, in Delhi.

These temperature recordings stood a minimum of 7 degrees above the trend for the areas mentioned above during this time in the month of May. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier issued a red warning for Delhi and neighbouring states and UTs, including Chandigarh, Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan. The IMD issued an orange alert for states such as UP, Bihar and Gujarat.
