Cairo: A ship extracting oil has overturned in the Gulf of Suez. At least four members of the crew have died due to the ship being overturned. Four other missing are also being reported in this accident. Officials have given information about the incident on Wednesday. The Petroleum Ministry said in a statement that the oil extract ship was in the northwest part of the Red Sea on Tuesday evening. The statement said that the ship has overturned near the city of Ras Ghareb adjacent to the African part of the Gulf of Suez.
Egyptian navy engaged in search and rescue operations
Governor Amar Hanafi, Governor of Lal Sagar province, said that when the ship turned, there were 30 employees in it. He said that the rescue teams have recovered four bodies and 22 others were rescued, who have been rushed to the hospital. Hanafi reported that Egyptian Navy ships have joined the search and rescue operations.
Why the reversal ship?
Amar Hanafi said that a search operation was carried out overnight in search of four members of the driver’s team. It is not yet clear what was the reason for the overturning of the ship. Officials say that investigation is going on. However, local media reported that when the ship turned back, it was being taken to another area for excavation.
Other ships did not affect
The Ministry of Petroleum has said that the incident took place in the field of Gabel L-Baj. The region is a major Egyptian oil production site located at a distance of about 300 kilometers (186 mi) south of the Suez Canal. Admiral Osam Rabai, the head of the canal authority, said that the ships passing through the canal had not affected the ships. The Suez Canal connects the Gulf of Suez to the Mediterranean Sea. Rabai had to pass 33 ships through the global waterway on Wednesday in which there was no obstruction. (AP)
