Sports Illustrated published articles by fake authors with AI-generated photos: Report

San Francisco, November 28 (IANS). American sports magazine Sports Illustrated (SI) has published articles on its website with AI-generated headshots under the name of a fake author.

A report released Monday by Futurism provided evidence that images of several writers on Sports Illustrated’s website were available for purchase on a website selling AI-generated headshots.

For example, the bio of a writer named ‘Drew Ortiz’ on Sports Illustrated’s website states, “There’s hardly a weekend these days when Drew isn’t camping, hiking, or going back to his parents’ farm. According to the report, the photo of ‘Drew Ortiz’ that appeared on Sports Illustrated’s website was an AI-generated image available on the website with the description of ‘a young boy with short brown hair and blue eyes’.

The fake authors’ information is being removed after Futurism contacted Arena Group, which publishes Sports Illustrated, for comment.

Articles with alleged AI-generated bylines now have a disclaimer. That said, it is created by a third party and the Sports Illustrated editorial staff was not involved in the creation of this content.

According to Variety, Arena Group has ended its partnership with post supply company Advon Commerce.

An Arena Group spokesperson was quoted as saying, “The articles in question were product reviews and licensed content from an external, third-party company, AdWon Commerce. Many of AdWon’s e-commerce articles ran on some Arena websites.”

It added, “We continuously monitor our partners and were in the review phase when these allegations were made. AdWon has assured us that all articles in question were written and edited by humans.”

The representative further noted, “According to AdWon their writers, editors and researchers create and manage the content and follow a policy that includes using both anti-plagiarism and anti-AI software on all content .

The company said, “Arena Group discovered that Advon has used the nicknames of some authors in some articles to protect their privacy, which we do not approve of. As a result, we are removing the content while our internal investigation continues.” And we have ended the partnership.
