New Delhi: It is well said that “laughter is the best medicine”. Believed to have originated from proverbs 17.22 of the King James Bible, the saying might come into use as laughter plays a significant role in the well being of human beings and keeps them fit and fine by decreasing stress hormones. Scientifically, laughter produces infection-fighting antibodies and immune cells that enhance humans potential to resist diseases. Thus, the first Sunday of May is annually observed as World Laughter Day. Devoted to the art of laughter and its potential to revive and heal people, World Laughter Day 2024 will be observed on May 5.

Who started World Laughter Day?

It was Dr Madan Kataria, an Indian physician and the founder of the Laughter Yoga movement, who is known for establishing World Laughter Day in 1998. The aim of establishing the day was to create awareness about the therapeutic benefits of laughter. Additionally, the doctor also aimed to use the potential of laughter to bring people together on one platform, regardless of geographical and cultural differences.

The observance of the day includes various activities such as laughter walks, laughter yoga sessions, and public gatherings focusing on happiness and positivity.

Aim of observing World Laughter Day
