India abstained from voting on a UN General Assembly resolution recognizing the role of sports in building a peaceful and better world through sports, preventing and countering terrorism and violent extremism, as well as promoting human rights. took.

The 193-member UN General Assembly on Tuesday adopted a draft resolution ‘Building a peaceful and better world through sports and the Olympics’ introduced by France.

The resolution is traditionally passed unanimously, but this year, Russia called for a recorded vote on its text.

Of the 193 UN member states, 120 voted at the UNGA on the resolution. 118 votes were cast in its favor while no votes were cast against it, while Russia and Syria abstained.

India was among the 73 countries that abstained from voting on the resolution. The resolution recognized the contribution of sport in creating an environment of tolerance and understanding between people and countries, its role in preventing and countering terrorism and violent extremism and its contribution against violence and recruitment to terrorists.

It recognizes that sport and the Olympic and Paralympic Games can be used to promote human rights and strengthen universal respect for such rights, thus contributing to their full implementation.

The UN General Assembly considers this resolution every two years, before the Summer and Winter Olympic Games.

In view of the Olympic Games being held in Paris from 26 July to 11 August next year and the Paralympic Games from 28 August to 8 September next year, the proposal calls on Member States to ensure that the Olympic Games are held in Paris from seven days before the start of the Games and seven days after the Paralympic Games end. Individuals and collectively were urged to observe the Olympic ceasefire until later in the day.

This is to “ensure the safe travel, access and participation of athletes, officials and all other persons participating in the Olympiad and Paralympic Games, as well as other appropriate measures for the safe conduct of the Games.”

According to information provided on the United Nations website, Russia said that the International Olympic Committee’s decision to bar Russian athletes from participating in the Olympic Games is political and discriminatory.

The Russian representative said that double standards and separation on the basis of nationality are a violation of basic human rights.

International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach said that in today’s critical times, the Olympic ceasefire resolution is more relevant than ever.

“The Olympic Games can make this contribution to peace through a fundamental commitment to political neutrality and universality,” Bach said.

He said one aspect of non-discrimination is that athletes cannot be held responsible for the actions of their governments or their National Olympic Committees.

He said that all players who are eligible on the field of play and are following the rules of the Olympic Charter should have the opportunity to participate in international competitions.

“We are maintaining this principle of non-discrimination even in the context of the Russian National Olympic Committee’s violation of the Olympic Charter,” Bach said. “We had to suspend them because they violated the territorial integrity of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine by including sports organizations from Ukrainian regions as its members.”

He said that upholding all these Olympic values is the contribution that “we can make to the Olympic Movement to build a better and more peaceful world through sport.”
