Kent, April 16 (Hindustan Reporter) Great England spinner and ICC Hall of Famer Derek Underwood passed away on Monday at the age of 78.

In an international career spanning over 15 years, Underwood represented England in 86 Tests and 26 ODIs. He took 297 wickets in Test cricket, which is still the most for any spinner for England and the sixth most wickets overall.

In his domestic career, Underwood played solely for Kent, making his debut in 1963 at the age of 17.

In 676 first-class games, Underwood took 2,465 wickets with his left-arm spin, in addition to taking 572 wickets in 411 List-A games before retiring in 1987.

“It is always a sad day when a great player of the English game passes away,” ECB chairman Richard Thompson said in a statement quoted by the ICC.

According to the retrospective ICC Men's Test Player Rankings, Derek Underwood was the world No. 1 ranked bowler from September 1969 to August 1973.

Underwood served as President of Kent Cricket Club in 2006, President of Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) in 2008, and was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame in 2009.
