New Delhi: Amid speculations and questions over his future in the Indian Premier League (IPL), MS Dhoni is reportedly set to travel to London to undergo surgery for a muscle tear injury soon. The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) legend is likely to take a call on his future in the IPL after the surgery. Dhoni returned home on Saturday, immediately after CSK’s exit from IPL 2024 on Friday.

CSK went down fighting against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and suffered a 27-run defeat in their final league game of the season to crash out of the tournament. Dhoni played a cameo of 25 runs off 13 balls and nearly got CSK past the qualification mark of 201 runs in the 218-run chase. He walked off the ground disappointed as CSK were eventually knocked out of the tournament.

Ever since CSK’s exit from IPL 2024, questions regarding Dhoni’s retirement have been flying thick and fast as the ongoing season was expected to be the last one for the legendary wicket-keeper batter, who also stepped down from captaincy and handed over the baton to Ruturaj Gaikwad. However, Dhoni is yet to address the speculations regarding his retirement.

As per a report in IANS, a source privy to the information has revealed that Dhoni will be travelling to London to get operated for a muscle tear injury and will take a call on his future in the IPL only after his treatment.

“Dhoni might head to London for his muscle tear surgery which saw him struggling during the IPL. He is not fully fit but wants to continue to play cricket and he will only decide about his future after treatment which will take him five to six months to recover,” a source was quoted as saying by IANS.

Dhoni was spotted struggling with his injury issues throughout the IPL. He struggled to run between the wickets and also faced limitations while keeping wickets. He was also spotted limping on several occasions but didn’t miss even a single game for CSK. Dhoni looked in fine touch in a few matches and ended up smashing 161 runs averaging over 53 at an impressive strike rate of 220.54.

Dhoni underwent knee surgery last year

Dhoni had undergone knee surgery last year immediately after leading Chennai Super Kings to their fifth title. He was operated in Mumbai after the conclusion of the IPL 2023 final against Gujarat Titans. Despite turning 42 and his powers waning, Dhoni remains an integral part of the CSK squad considering his experience and leadership qualities.

CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan recently opened up on Dhoni’s future in the IPL and revealed the former captain has held no discussions with the management regarding his retirement and that he will take a call himself on whether he wants to continue playing or not.
