– Dubai airport stalled, warning of hailstorm during next 24 hours

Dubai, 17 April (HIST). Those who yearn for water in the desert are now dying by drowning in water. Something like this was seen in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and its surrounding countries on Tuesday. Heavy rain in the UAE left parts of major highways flooded and vehicles stranded on roads across Dubai. Operations at Dubai International Airport (DXB), one of the world's busiest airports, were halted for about 25 minutes.

The death toll from floods in neighboring Oman has risen to 18 and several others are missing. Rainfall is unusual in the UAE, a country on the Arabian Peninsula, with the lack of regular rainfall resulting in many roads and other areas lacking drainage systems, leading to flooding. Due to heavy rain, the UAE administration on Tuesday requested people to stay in their homes. Schools conducted classes online. Government employees were also asked to work from home. The administration had to install huge pumps to remove water from highways and roads. On Tuesday, when lightning flashed across the UAE sky, it sometimes touched the tip of the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building.

The National Meteorological Center has asked residents of Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and some other emirates to be prepared for heavy rain and hailstorm during the next 24 hours. There has also been heavy rain in UAE's neighboring countries Bahrain, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. In Oman, 18 people have died due to floods caused by heavy rains in recent days. These include 10 school children whose vehicle was washed away in the flood. Streets were flooded in Bahrain's capital Manama. There is a possibility of cyclone in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Oman on Wednesday.
